As we’ve already learned, cellists are the coolest members of the orchestra. But David Fernandez, aka Ecce Cello, takes the inherent coolness of cello playing to the next level.
If Google decided to hire a cellist for their staff Christmas party, this is the guy they would hire. Fernandez is a technology-using, self-looping, TED Talk-giving creative dynamo, who also happens to be a very talented musician.
The album cover was enough to get my attention; anyone willing to glue 50 audio cassettes on his face deserves at least a few minutes of my listening time. But it doesn’t take more than a few seconds to be drawn into Fernandez’ musical world.
What makes this a beautiful song:
1. The opening few seconds are what it would sound like if Amelie hosted “60 Minutes”.
2. The abrupt key change at 1:06. Unconventional, but satisfying.
3. The resolution to the relative major at 2:44. More conventional, and even more satisfying.
